Welcome to the Cumberland County, Illinois Genealogy web site. This site was established as a part of the Illinois GenWeb Project which is a part of the USGenWeb Project.
Cumberland County was created on March 2, 1843 from the southern part of Coles County. The court house in Toledo burned to the ground in 1885, thus official records for the period 1843 to 1885 are non-existent. Check out Coles County for records of the present Cumberland County area in the period 1831 to 1843. From 1819 to 1831, the Cumberland County area was part of Clark County. From 1817 to 1819, it was part of Crawford County. From 1814 to 1817, it was part of Edwards County. From 1812 to 1814 it was part of Madison County. And from 1809 to 1812, it was part of St.Clair County. See the Illinois County Boundaries 1790-Present web site for maps showing county boundary changes.
My name is Michael L. Hébert and, as a volunteer, I adopted Cumberland County as part of the Illinois GenWeb Project. I have been pursuing my roots for a few years now. My grandmother was born in Cumberland County and many of her ancestors arrived there in the early 19th century.
