Barbara (Hays) Clayton Attends 1st DAR Function
Mrs. Barb (Hays) Clayton, wife of Olin Clayton of Raymond, Il has been accepted
into membership by the Springfield Chapter of the Daughters of the American
Revolution. Barb Clayton filed her membership through her maternal 6th
great grandfather, Captain Andrew Byrd III and his wife Ann Jones. Mrs. Clayton
learned about her lineage through the author Ben Kingery, who wrote "Samuel
and Catherine (Spong) Kingery and Their Descendants". Ben Kingery is Mrs.
Clayton's cousin, who wrote and published the above book in 1995. The book
was printed by John Kingery, another cousin of Mrs. Clayton's, who owns Kingery
Publishing in Effingham, Il. The DAR held their Annual Christmas function at the
Illini Country Club in Springfield, Il on December 19, 1998. Mrs. Clayton
is the daughter of the late Dewey and Florence (Altevogt) Hays. Florence is the
daughter of the late Gus Altevogt and his wife Vera Stark. Vera Stark is
the daughter of Timothy and Bertha (Stout) Stark. Bertha was the daughter of
Daniel and Fannie (Kingery) Stout. Fannie was the daughter of Samuel and
Martha Jane (Rawlings) Kingery. Samuel Kingery was the son of David and
Mary (Byrd) Kingery. Mary Byrd was the daughter of John and Elizabeth
(Coffman) Byrd. John Byrd was the son of Captain Andrew Byrd III and his wife
Ann Jones. Captain Andrew Byrd III was the son of Captain Andrew Byrd II
and his wife Mary Reese. Captain Andrew Byrd II was the son of Captain
Andrew Byrd I and his wife Magdalene Jones. Magdalene was the daughter of
Mons Jonasson and his wife Ingaborg Lycon. Mons Jonasson was the son of Jonas
Nielsson and his wife Gertrude Svensdotter, both natives of Skaraborg,
Sweden. Two of Mrs. Clayton's cousins have sent copies of their DAR
records showing their membership through Captain Andrew Byrd II and I.
Mrs. Clayton is a cousin of Democrat Senator Richard Byrd of Virginia.
Mrs. Clayton owns over 400 pages of documents on the Byrd family received from
the Virginia State Archives. Captain Andrew Byrd I was the son of Abraham
and Cornelia (Cooke) Byrd. Mrs. Clayton's National # is 788217.
Through the Byrd lineage, Mrs. Clayton is a descendant of the Magna Carta
Barons, through Mary Horsmanden, who married William Byrd of Virginia.

Brushy Ridge School
submitted by Kathy
Willis
Below are class pictures of Bushy Ridge
School, located just
northeast of Greenup at the intersection of county routes 1900E and 700N.
It is on the Greenup and Union Township boundary near Boots Cemetery (see plat
map or MapQuest). The first picture is dated 19 May 1910. The second one is undated but is likely from the
period 1911 to 1915. The only person identified in each picture is Ghuela
NEELEY, born 16 July 1904, daughter of Harve and Emma (UMBARGER) NEELEY. She is labeled as
"me" with an arrow in each picture ... 4th from right in front row in
1910 picture and 2nd from right in middle row in the other picture. If
anyone can identify any of the other people in the picture, please contact Kathy
Willis. You can click on the pictures to see an enlarged version of
them.
